If you are considering having a baby with us, you may be particularly interested in water birth. Approximately 85% of the babies born at the Birth Center are born in the water. Deep tubs are provided in each birthing room. Laboring women find the water to be helpful in coping with labor as it progresses and a gentle way to birth their babies.

Prenatal Care

Prenatal care is the essential care a woman receives during her pregnancy. The goal of prenatal care is to monitor the progress of the baby’s development and to identify potential problems before they become a serious health risk for the baby or expectant mother. Research shows that women who receive regular prenatal care have healthier babies and are less likely to experience premature labor and birth. Midwives are trained to provide comprehensive prenatal care throughout pregnancy in order to enhance a woman's health, minimize risk factors and identify and prevent potential problems. During your appointments, you will have the opportunity to discuss your personal needs, previous birth experiences, as well as fears and expectations for your pregnancy and birth We recommend scheduling your first visit to your provider between 8 and 10 weeks of pregnancy. This appointment will include physical assessments, education and time getting to know the midwives. During this important first appointment, you will provide your midwife with a complete health and pregnancy history so that the midwife will be aware of any health condition or problem that may affect your health or the health of the baby during this pregnancy. Physical exam may include:
  • Pelvic exam
  • Blood Pressure
  • Blood Tests
  • Urine Tests
  • Ultrasound
If you are pregnant or suspect you are pregnant, schedule a visit with your midwife as soon as possible. Regular prenatal care is important to help ensure that both the mother and the baby remain healthy throughout the course of pregnancy.
During prenatal visits, your midwife will:
  • Provide education about a healthy pregnancy
  • Monitor the condition of mother and baby
  • Follow the progress of the baby’s development
  • Review birth options

Postpartum and Newborn Care

The period of time following the birth of your newborn is known as the postpartum or postnatal period. A midwife’s services continue in the days and weeks following the delivery of the baby, some of the most challenging and exciting times for mothers and families. The mother and baby are closely monitored by the midwife following birth. The midwife will monitor a woman’s physical well being, review birth stories, provide emotional support, as well as perform physical exams of the mother and newborn. Postpartum care begins immediately following the birth of the baby and includes:
  • Newborn exam
  • Breastfeeding support
  • Mother’s care and physical exam
  • Advice regarding infant care
During this time, the midwife can also address any health problems, concerns or questions the mother may have regarding her general well being and newborn care.

Gynecology and Well-Woman Care

Certified Nurse Midwives not only attend to pregnancy and childbirth, they can also offer a full scope of well-woman care for women in all stages of life- from adolescence to menopause and beyond. It is a time that can be focused on a woman's individual needs with open, educational discussions around her personal health history, values and concerns. Well-woman care from a midwife includes:
  • Annual gynecology exams
  • Pap smears
  • Breast exams
  • Pelvic exams
  • Menopausal care
  • Contraceptive counseling
  • General wellness and female health issues
  • Natural family planning
Well-woman care is important during every phase of a woman’s life. With a focus on education and preventative health care for a woman’s individual needs, midwives can empower women to make the best decisions about their health care options in order to achieve their optimal health.

Preconception Counseling

The decision to get pregnant is an important time for any woman. Ideally, it’s best to see your midwife before you get pregnant, also known as preconception counseling or pregnancy planning. During this time a woman can meet with her midwife to discuss her pregnancy plan and address any issues or concerns about pregnancy. The midwife can help the woman optimize her physical and emotional health and pave the way for a healthy, happy pregnancy prior to conceiving. Preconception counseling from your midwife includes:
  • Physical assessment
  • Fertility awareness
  • Controlling bad habits and unhealthy lifestyle choices
  • Healthy diet
  • Prenatal vitamins
  • Exercise and fitness
  • Stress Relief
Your midwife will help you understand any health conditions or risk factors that could affect your baby during pregnancy, as diet, bad habits, medications and medical conditions can all have an impact on a baby, even before her or she is conceived. A midwife can also answer questions and concerns surrounding prenatal visits, labor, delivery and postpartum care. As soon as you start thinking about getting pregnant, it’s important for a woman to visit her midwife for preconception counseling.
